chemlok® 234x(nw) adhesive
Chemlok234X(NW) is a general-purpose topcoat adhesive, used in conjunction with Chemlok205 primer adhesive. Use this adhesive system to bond a variety of vulcanized or unvulcanized rubber to metal or other substrates treated with a primer adhesive. This product is a mixture formed by dissolving and dispersing various polymers, organic compounds and mineral fillers in an organic solvent system. Chemlok234X(NW) is suitable for joining NR, IR, SBR, BR, CR, NBR (Acrylonitrile-Butadiene Rubber), IIR and CSM.

Features and Benefits

Versatile - Use with primer Chemlok 205 to adhere to a variety of cured or uncured elastomeric materials, followed by non-polar rubber materials based on IIR and EPDM.
Easy to apply - brush, dip, roller or spray all work.

Instructions

SURFACE PREPARATION - Thoroughly clean metal surfaces before applying adhesive. Use solvent-based degreasers or alkaline cleaners to remove protective oils, cutting oils and grease from metal surfaces. Choose appropriate chemical cleaning and mechanical cleaning methods to remove rust and oxide layers on metal surfaces.

  • Chemical cleaning Chemical treatment can be used for metal parts that will be deformed during sandblasting or where the tolerance requirements are very strict. Phosphating is a common chemical treatment method for steel, and conversion coating is usually used for aluminum.
  • mechanical cleaning
Sandblasting is the most common method of mechanical cleaning. In addition, mechanical cleaning methods include steel brush cleaning, grinding or machining. Use steel grit to blast steel, cast iron or other ferrous metals. For stainless steel, aluminum, brass, zinc, and other non-ferrous metals use aluminum oxide, sand, or other non-ferrous metal grit.

Stirring - Before applying Chemlok234X(NW) Adhesive to the primer, please stir the adhesive thoroughly and evenly. It also needs to be fully stirred during use to keep the solid content in a uniform state. The time required for stirring varies depending on the size of the package and the storage time. Please follow the following principles to ensure uniform mixing and a consistent appearance.

  • Gallon Pails - Mix by hand, paint shaker or air mixer for 20-30 minutes
  • Five-gallon bucket - Loosen the sediment manually and then stir with an air mixer for 45-60 minutes. Before using the adhesive, please confirm whether there is still sediment at the bottom of the adhesive after stirring. If there is sediment, please repeat Stir step. For dilution, use toluene or xylene. Xylene is recommended for spray application and toluene for brush or dip application.

Application - Apply Chemlok 234X(NW) by brush, dip, roller or spray.
In order to achieve the best bonding strength, the dry film thickness of Chemlok234X(NW) should be controlled within the range of 12.7-25.4 micron (0.5-1.0 mil). Followed by vulcanized rubber the dry film thickness is typically 20.3-38.1 micron (0.8-1.5 mil).

Drying/Vulcanization - Air dry at room temperature for 30-60 minutes (16-32°C).
After the adhesive is applied, it needs to be dried, and the solvent has been completely evaporated by visual inspection. Usually, it takes about 30-60 minutes at room temperature. Preheating metal parts or drying after coating can reduce drying time. Metal parts can be preheated up to 65°C before applying the adhesive. The drying temperature should be properly controlled, and a high temperature of 149°C can be used for drying in a short period of time, and a lower temperature and higher air circulation can have a better drying effect. Chemlok234X(NW) coating film is non-sticky after drying, so coated objects can be stacked in trays for subsequent processing. Clean gloves should be worn when handling coated objects, and a cover should be added to the tray to prevent contamination. If the object is properly protected, it can be stored for up to 30 days after the coating is completed and before it is applied.

Post-cure bonding - heat until the bonding interface reaches 149-177°C (300-350°F) and hold for 20-40 minutes to achieve post-cure bonding. During the heating and cooling process, the rubber part needs to maintain a compression deformation of 5-10% to ensure the close contact between the rubber and the metal. Lubricant may be required depending on assembly requirements. If lubrication is required during assembly, naphthenic lubricants can be used.

Removal - Use xylene to remove excess adhesive before heating, or use sandblasting or grinding to remove hardened adhesive.

Expiry date/storage
